Dr. George Murray Levick recorded the shocking and what he called “depraved” sexual acts of penguins while exploring Antarctica in 1910. Levick was a biologist and pioneer in studying penguins. Anyways, the descriptions were so shocking that they were removed from official accounts.
Levick was a conservative Edwardian man. He was so disgusted by the Adelie penguins he was observing that he wrote down the information in Greek. The males were mating with dead females as Levick understood it. Upon returning to England, Levick published a book of his observations of the Adelie penguins.
It was a little too much for its time, and the sexual depictions were removed from the publishing. Today, we understand what was really going on with the adelie penguins. The penguins were not partaking in necrophilia. The males are sexually aroused by the laying down position the females take for sex.
