A fish's age is determined similar to the way a tree's age is estimated - by counting rings! Most fish have a series of growth rings on their scales called annuli that can be used to calculate their age. Hanako (meaning "flower maid), the world's oldest koi carp, died in 1977 at the ripe old age of 226!
