You’re probably wondering why 4,000 monkeys would be in South Carolina, but the answer is actually quite simple. Scientists put them there. The island is called Morgan island and back in the 1970’s researchers were hoping to get a closer look into the habits of monkeys and so they brought over several hundred.
They were initially interested in seeing if the monkeys could simply survive and reproduce in a foreign environment, and were astonished by the results. The monkeys reproduced so well that the initial hundreds have turned into thousands.
Every year, 500 monkeys are taken from the island to be studied. Everything from polio vaccines to bio-terrorism encompasses the tests they undergo, and scientists say the handful of monkeys have the possibility to save millions of people. Animal testing is always controversial. What do you think about this island’s existence?
